Strolling along Qushuiting Street is like stepping into a flowing ink painting. This place is not only steeped in a rich cultural atmosphere and poetic charm but also filled with the vibrant essence of everyday life, with the aroma of street food and the lively craftsmanship. Around every corner, you might encounter inheritors of intangible cultural heritage, where tradition and modernity interweave to create a unique charm.

Gourd Carving Inheritors: Machines Cannot Replicate or Replace Manual Craftsmanship

The word “hulu“ (gourd) is a homophone for “fulu“, a Chinese word symbolizing prosperity and fortune. The lush foliage, fruitful vines, and the many-seeded gourd imply “descendants thriving for generations, flourishing and auspicious.“ Gourd carving art is a traditional folk craft in China, integrating calligraphy, painting, and seal carving. Artisans need to conceive patterns based on the natural shape of the gourd, carefully designing every line and every shade of color. Gao Xiang and Guo Wenxuan, two inheritors of this intangible cultural heritage, have opened a gourd carving studio nearby, where a variety of gourd crafts are displayed, all crafted with their exquisite skills.

With a passion and dedication to this traditional craft, the two inheritors have traveled more than 20 years on the path of gourd carving, creating works that range from simple pieces completed in a few hours to large-scale creations that take years to finish. In their view, love is the foundation of engaging in gourd carving, and the accumulation of art and aesthetics is key to producing works that are flavorful and enduring. They believe that even with today's rapidly advancing technology, machines cannot replicate or replace manual craftsmanship, as these hand-carved gourds embody the emotions and vitality of the creator. In the future, they hope that gourd carving can be passed down in an orderly fashion, with healthy competition and systematic study, allowing this ancient art to continue to shine in modern society.

Photographer Xiao Chen: Preserving the Old Town's Culture through Images is a Mission

In addition to the veteran craftsmen, Qushuiting Street is also frequented by artistic youths. Photographer Xiaochen has opened a photo studio named “Old City Stories“ on this street, capturing old times with modern art. Driven by his deep affection for old Jinan and his obsession with photography, he has been taking nostalgic portraits for guests on this street for 15 years.

Xiao Chen, who is passionate about history and the owner of “Old City Stories“ photo studio, believes that preserving the culture of the old town through images is a beautiful mission. Jinan's five major tourism elements—mountains, springs, lakes, rivers, and the city—serve not only as the city's calling cards but also as the inspiration for his photographic creations. Beyond the landscapes, Xiao Chen incorporates traditional handicrafts such as paper-cutting and rabbit kings as photographic props, organically combining the old town's cultural heritage with modern image art. He posits that with the enhancement of urban life conveniences, Jinan's approachable spring culture and the unique “hustle and bustle“ of the city will attract people from around the world to experience and explore its history.

Old Street Became Internet-famous: The Blending of Folk Culture and Modern Art

In order to regain its prosperity as a hub for merchants, in 2013, Qushuiting Streetwas established as a “Folk Culture Street.“ After several renovations and transformations, the streamlined, industrial-style shops gradually disappeared, replaced by distinctive folk handicraft antique stalls. Eighteen different crafts such as Shandong embroidery, calligraphy, antiques and paintings, coarse cloth, dough figurines, paper-cutting, bead stringing, and comics all made their appearance. The old street has gradually become an internet-famous spot due to its cultural displays.

Running water never goes stale, and a frequently used door hinge never gets worm-eaten. Ancient intangible cultural heritage and modern art shine together here, radiating a unique charm. Qushuiting Street welcomes guests from all directions, not only sowing the seeds of art in every corner but also deeply rooting theheritage in people's hearts. Both traditional handicrafts and innovative artistic expressions have found their own stage on this street, allowing every visitor to feel the cultural depth of Jinan and the boundless vitality of life.
